An exhibition opening in October 2008 in the red basement at Sinebrychoff Art Museum, presents the different stages in the reconstruction of the Italian master Caravaggio’s (1571-1610) supremely unique St. Matthew and the Angel, which was destroyed during the bombing of Berlin.
The exhibition portrays for the first time the reconstruction of Caravaggio’s greatest work from his period in Rome. The reconstruction was painted to the original size as accurately and painstakingly as possible in a style that remained faithful to the vivid technique of the master. The project was launched in 2003 and it has aroused interest both in Finland and abroad, which is born out by the highly acclaimed international group of experts who consulted the Finnish artist Antero Kahila
(1954).
